For us, the use of a beef trachea was one of those in-shop purchases that just looked like a nice treat for our dogs. It wasn’t until we got our one dog from a rescue and he had an incredible amount of oral health issues.
His baby teeth were pretty mangled and he looked like he was never going to have a healthy mouth. Our vet recommended trying to give him some beef tracheas to see if it helps him at all. All we were told was that it can poke and prod at his gums, which can move things along in terms of cleaning up his mouth.
We bought a few just to give it a chance and to our surprise, it worked like absolute magic. Overnight, our dog went from having what seems like lifelong oral health issues to having a whole new set of teeth. I should be completely honest here, though.
The process involved him losing all his baby teeth which actually caused a bit of a bloody mess. He didn’t seem to be in pain or mind at all. In fact, getting those baby teeth out was probably easing a lot of pain for him. With a bunch of supervision and a towel that was going straight to the trash, we watched him fix 100% of his oral health issues with about five dollars worth of beef trachea. After that single incident, we were sold on the use of beef tracheas.

Dried Beef Trachea
- Contains glucosamine & chondroitin, which aid in joint health
- Long-lasting flavor
- 100% digestible
Dehydrated, dried beef trachea is the go-to choice for us. They’re really easy to store and don’t require any special storage precautions. We’ll just buy a handful at a time and hold onto them. We will use them about once a month but have been known to go a few months without using them. We tend to treat them like a dentist visit. When we take out a dried beef trachea, our dog’s tails begin to wag so hard that they knock things over.
Raw Beef Trachea
If you’ve been feeding your dog raw food, then a raw beef trachea might be easily accessible to you. It should provide the same nutrition benefits as a dried beef trachea, if not more. We don’t have tons of experience with feeding our dogs raw beef trachea, but we know dogs that have been given raw beef trachea as other raw food that contains a large amount of cartilage. It’s a good rule of thumb to assume that any raw food that contains cartilage can provide the same benefits of beef trachea.
Is Beef Trachea Safe For Dogs
Beef trachea is considered safe for dogs, but if you aren’t sure if your dog should have one you should supervise them. Beef trachea is great to use because they are easy to chew through and become soft when your dog starts to show it some attention. There may be some concern with your dog enjoying it too much and eating it too quickly. If this sounds like your dog, then you should definitely watch them while they eat it. Our dogs can devour one of these in just a few minutes. They’re really easy to break apart into smaller pieces, so you can essentially give them in chunks.
Benefits Of Beef Trachea
For us, the one and only benefit we look at is oral health. Beef tracheas work like magic for cleaning a dog’s mouth. We’ve used those toothbrush dog treats and also a solution you can add to their drinking water if your dog has bad breath. But when we used beef tracheas, we didn’t need the other products as badly. I’m telling you, these are a great way for your dog to keep a healthy mouth. On top of that, there are some nutritional benefits that promote good joint health.
The only nutritional benefit that’s ever talked about for beef tracheas is how it can help your dog with their joint health. This is actually difficult to track and manage, especially if you give them in the same frequency that we do (1-3 months apart). If you have a larger breed, you will definitely want to keep an eye out for his joint health. Larger dogs tend to have joint problems simply because of the weight on their bones and joints. This could be an easy way to keep those joints healthier longer!
